Designer Bride: Gota Jewellery - Traditional Artisanry for Modern Times by Ather and Sabeen

There are some obscure traditions in our culture that when I stumble upon them, really leave me in a marvel at how diverse and skilled in so many crafts the South Asian diaspora really is.  And when fashion designers decide to reconceptualize them in a modern context through their own collections, we get a modern take on a cenuries  old concept.  So you can imagine how enthralled I was by the work of designers Ather and Sabeen in gota kaam to make pieces of jewellery for their Malang Collection in 2011.

Gota kaam, or gota kinari is basically the use of gold or silver ribbon in embroidery to create texture and pattern in clothes.  Used in jewellery in some parts of pakistan, it was, and still is, worn by brides on their mehndi or mayoun.

I feel fairly certain that I've posted this before, but it's GORGEOUS,
so even if it ends up on the site twice, who cares? via Paklinks
