Real Bride: Suri and Ruben's Next Day Edit by Film Style Weddings

Friday, July 29, 2011 | | 0 comments
I just posted the concept film created by Film Style Weddings for Suri and Ruben.  The team also travelled to Winnipeg, Canada to capture the wedding day, and all the pre-wedding events.  The bride looked very regal with her chunari set very high over a dramatic updo and finished with a matha patti.

Thanks to the team at Film Style Weddings Cinematography for this beautiful submission!

Real Bride: Suri and Ruben's Dreamy Concept Video by FilmStyle Weddings

It's Friiiidayyy. Wooohoo.  I am seriously grateful for the weekend, got lots planned and to get things started off right, I want to share a special treat with you from of FilmStyle Weddings.  Cinematographer extraordinaire, Jawad Mir, sent in this video and when I opened the link it had me at Rahat. Lol...the video features Rahat Fateh Ali Khan* and footage of one of his concerts which the couple happened to attend.

Suri and Ruben, the couple in the video are from Winnipeg, but travelled to Toronto to work with Jawad and his team. The FilmStyle team has an incredible amount of professionalism and a willingness to be accommodating.  They spent countless hours developing the concepts with the couple, travelling to ensure they met filming deadlines, and working on tight schedules to finish the editing.

Of course, none of that shows in the final product, which is justa pure, unadulterated vignette about a love story.  Watched it?  Loved it?  Can't get enough?  Don't worry, there's more where that came from, and I'll be back later to show you how FilmStyle Weddings sets the tone for the opening of the next chapter in Suri and Ruben's love story.

*In the original draft of this post, I stated that the background music was a Nusrat Fateh Ali  Khan Song.  It is, in fact, a bollywood tune.

The Zen Bride: Admitting Self-Limitations

Wednesday, July 27, 2011 | | 0 comments
If life is self-discovery, then mastery is in teaching what you learn.  And in being completely honest, I'll share with you a lesson I am processing for myself, and I think it will be useful to a lot of brides.  I talked before about discovering my capacity for a lot of possibilities that I didn't realize existed in me before marriage.  I think it's fair to mention that the opposite is true too. There are times in our lives when we have a tendency to put aside our respect for what we are capable of achieving and push a little too hard.

A wedding is a good example of this. The hype around weddings, the temptation to compare, and the need to create a unique event increase the pressure that much more.  Most brides do not have the luxury of setting aside everything to devote themselves to the process of wedding planning, and even if you do hire a wedding planner or have an army of helpful, non-judgemental family members, you can't exactly delegate things like choosing the details, attending family events, getting to know your in-laws, and being a fiance.  All this while maintaining our day to commitments to work, family, friends, school and our own bodies.

For myself, I can say that I have a hard time admitting that I can't do it all because I don't want to admit I am less than capable of anything, and I really want it all to be perfect and done my way.  I've learned I am learning to be honest about what I can do, letting some things go (ouch), and working on realistic schedules instead of type-A ones. I have discovered that I am a lot happier, and I don't feel any worse about myself when I admit that I just can't do everything.

The Bride's Lookbook: Editorial Fashion Inspiration from Photographer Meagan Cignoli

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 | | 0 comments

New York editorial and fashion photographer Meagan Cignoli is well known in media and fashion circles for creating images of character, artistry and visual depth.  So when she decides to take her eye and her skills to India, you know that what you're going to receive from her will be breathtaking imagery of a country and culture that is already eulogized for it's visual poetry.  I was thrilled when Meagan agreed to allow me to post some of her work here, because the photographs are so beautifully composed and make it easy to imagine that anyone of us can create the extraordinary out of ordinary fashion choices.  I'll have more posted in an album on my facebook page.

Love at First Sight: Isharya Crazy Flower Bib Chain Necklace

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 | | 0 comments
Indian-American Designer Jewellery brand Isharya is a hit with everyone and their stylist.  It's a hit with me because it's hot.  I like their stuff because it's cool, looks Indian, but not, and I would wear it with anything and everything.  This beautiful multi-tiered necklace of freshwater pearls and coloured glass from their Modern Maharani is just that, thoroughly modern in tone, but very much Maharani in its inspiration. The matching ring is also gorg.  I love the light and summery feel to the whole set, and I think it would look great for a statement piece.

I know it costs somewhere in the range of a few hundred dollars, but somehow, it all seems worth it.  Crazy? Love is.  Price: 798 USD via Isharya's Website.

The Pulled-Together Bride: Dealing With The Heat on Your Wedding Day

Toronto, and most of Canada, for that matter is in the middle of a heat-wave, and everyone everywhere is talking about keeping cool.  For brides getting married on a muggy summer's day, the heat can be especially challenging, because it isn't just uncomfortable, it is a serious threat to keeping your makeup, hair and clothing looking pulled-together for almost 6 to 8 hours. There are a few things you can do to keep the sweat, humidity and dishevelment to a minimum througout your wedding day.  Here are some tips to hopefully help out.
  • First of all, give yourself lots of time to get ready, and go slooooowly. Rushing around will make your body temperature rise, stress you out, make you sweaty and just generally a little messy looking.  Try to ensure that the room you use to get ready is calm, air-conditioned, shady, uncluttered, and relatively free of other members of the bridal party.
  • Start by washing your face with a light cleanser, and applying an astringent toner to wick up excess oil.  Even though I don't have oily skin, in the summer I favour formulations for oily skin like The Body Shop's Tea Tree Collection, because they really do make me feel less sweaty.
  • In the shower, don't use overly hot water, and end with a quick rinse in cool water.  Later, when you feel hot, just run your wrists under cold water or put ice on them.
  • Use baby powder after applying moisturizer on your skin to keep it dry.
  • I know a lot of makeup artists recommend blotting papers to keep your skin oil and sweat free, but I'm gonna be honest and say personally I don't find them effective on very hot days, when the sweat is more than just a little shine on my face and it's starting to bead.  I'm gonna give you some weird advice, that I've picked up from my work-outs, but it really works. You know those atheletic apparel tops made of that sweat wicking material like ClimaCool or UnderArmour? Well, I actually have a small cloth made from one of those old tops and I use it during workouts to blot my face.It gets rid of the real sweat on your neck, your arms, your back.  It's not pretty, but it works.  Keep blotting papers anyway, they make you feel pretty, but have someone secretly hold one of those cloths for you.
  • For hair, wear it up, out of your face and neck and apply an alcohol-free defrizz serum to start with.
  • If you can, get your hair blow-dried or straightened the day before, and hold on to the style for the wedding day, because all those hot hairstyling products only add to the heat around you, which you are trying to minimize.
  • Drink plenty of water, ice water, lemon water, perrier water, carbonated water, whatever water you prefer, drink lots of it.
There you go ladies, just writing this helped me cool down slightly, and hopefully these tips will come in handy when you are getting ready too.

Real Bride: Rebyl and Daniel's Christian Wedding by Lovell D'Souza Photography

Thursday, July 14, 2011 | | 0 comments
Lovell D'Souza takes pictures on the side. It's among the many other jobs this talented guy has, and I had no idea how busy he was when I first got in touch with him. But, he was kind enough to share some of his work with me nonetheless, and I am really appreciative of that. I wanted to feature a Christian wedding in India  to show the diversity of Indian culture when it comes to wedding traditions, and because I think we don't get to see enough of them.  The bride, Rebyl, wore a crystal and pearl encrusted beaded tiara and elegant white ball-gown style wedding dress with sheer sleeves.  For the evening reception, she changed into a chartreuse saree, and even though she does look more relaxed (maybe cause the ceremony's over?), she looks nothing less than refined.  To see more of this wedding behind the scenes, including the photographer's fave ten images from the wedding, click here, or to get in touch with Lovell D'Souza Photography, you can check out his site.
